If we are lucky enough to have a successful season in League One I can really see them imploding at the sight of our impending resurgence. Their fans won't be able to handle it and will take it out on their own club.

 

I would not be at all surprised to see us swapping leagues in 12 months time.

It would for me. I don't see us going up this season, but I can see them on a road to decline very soon

Love the thread title. Just waiting for the reality to dawn on their fans one by one. 

 

Don't think I've been as excited about a season (for us or them) for a long time.

I'm keeping my expectations at "they will be competing for 8th and the play-offs".

 

I don't think they will go up, but I also think it might be a touch too early to consider them in a relegation tailspin. The middle of The Championship is a total free for all and I don't think we can rule Wilder out of that mix.

 

But I'm almost certain they will start next season with less quality than they finished this one with, while likely still navigating a high wage bill and other outgoings that limit their ability to replace that quality or add depth, which is where the sh*t really begins.

 

What's important is that the status quo of the last 8-9 years - where they are either in the Prem and receiving Prem money, or are favourites to get back to it and spend accordingly for this level - is over.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that it's unfortunately more likely they'll make 8th next season than get relegated, I just wouldn't be shocked to see them in a relegation dogfight come the end of the season either.

 

Similarly, I'd be content with us finishing in the top half, considering the massive turnaround required (and not just on the pitch) - but if we make the top six I don't think anyone is going to be saying we've massively overachieved.

 

The mere thought of it even being possible that the tide could turn so quickly will have them seething if they don't get off to a good start on the back of us having a positive summer.

Oh I fully agree, but we've been awaiting their downfall and looking at them staring into the financial abyss for about 3 or 4 seasons now and they always pull a rabbit out of the hat. 

 

Need to see how the summer goes for both of us

You are absolutely right.

 

The division doesn't matter. If we pair up the momentum of the takeover with a productive, progressive summer and a good start in the league, any troubles they experience are going to be massively amplified.

 

The Sheffield derby is a pretty close (and petty) one. The things we celebrate as having over the other are mostly splitting hairs in the context of many other rivalries and derbies. Even in different divisions, if the momentum and narrative switches positively in one direction, it inevitably adds pressure on the other.

Deep down inside they all know how much bigger than them we are.

 

The only reason they’ve been able to compete with us over the last 25 years is because of our mismanagement more than their successes, they are terrified of Sheffield Wednesday under decent ownership.

Always a worry when the new thread starts, easy to look daft next May cos of wild predictions about next season. There's always a team that bucks the trend when it comes to expectations versus reality so I'd advise caution gloating about them just yet. 

 

FWIW I think they'll be relegated and we'll pass em on the way back up. They'll be In serious financial trouble and will drop through the leagues after that getting regular crowds under 10k,all on kids tickets. And they'll sack and rehire wilder another 3 times before even he realises it's not working out.
