If we are trying to build confidence in players that will start to feature regularly this season and next, then McNeill takes it. What difference do results make this season really? We looked decent for good parts, yes we lost but that means nothing this year. It'll have affected the confidence of both players and fans, a much improved performance yet still lost, which can be pinned directly on the decison to let a youngster take and miss a vital penalty at 2-2 when we were the better side. Another player might have missed it of course, but the mood would've been different as it wouldn't have been down to a daft decision. Plus that's saying "might have missed" as opposed to "actually did miss". It's also potentially cost us gate money from fans who'll say "bloody lost again whats the point" as opposed to "we had a good win last game, we'll go to the next one". 1
alan48 Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago If say Bannan had taken it and scored , then Preston would have had to play out a bit to try for an equaliser , thereby creating more space for us to exploit . McNeil may then well have scored another and his hat-trick through open play . 2

McNeill has taken it and missed and people have gone - Bannan should’ve taken it Stupid decision 1

Except McNeil has taken two previous penalties for the club and scored then both. He was confident and up for it. It was definitely NOT a charity penalty. It’s a shame he missed but not the end of the world. We would still have got a point if Clown Hands at the other end didn’t take 15 minutes to get down to a shot…

The longer we go without a win will destroy the confidence of the players. Of course losing every game matters. What will holding the record for the lowest number of wins in Championship history do for the team's confidence going into next season. Despite his 2 goals I bet McNeill is feeling really down now. I think that penalty miss by Ugbo earlier this year finished him, confidence wise. I get it Tommy - but we will probably be holding that record for ever and let’s face it next years squad won’t give a flying f+** about that because none of them will have played in this season Anyway let’s look on the bright side - we still hold the record as the last team outside the Prem to win a major trophy (34 years on)
Ever Hopeful Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago (edited) Since Smith left we don't have an obvious penalty taker as statistically Bannan has a relatively poor penalty record, so I have no issue with McNeill taking it. For me it wasn't a particularly bad penalty either - he hit it hard, low and on target - but the keeper made a good save. Very different from the Ugbo one where he skied it. The only issue I have with the penalty is how on earth the referee didn't send off the Preston player - he gave the penalty which means he saw the handball, and the rules are black and white - deliberate handball preventing a goal scoring opportunity is a straight red. Even if he deems it accidental it's a second yellow. If there's no handball Lowe is through on goal, so clearly a goal scoring opportunity - it's a shocking decision by the referee as it's just a very basic application of the laws of the game. andrew1974 Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago I’d seen that Ingelsson was the designated taker, he had hold of the ball and gave it to McNeill. its another poor decision on top of more poor decisions. Preston were there for the taking and wouldn’t have come back from 3-1.

As you say, definitely a card of some colour for this. The referee also did nothing about a spate of cynical fouls on McNeil and Amass. The first fouls should have been yellows which would have prevented the second foul at least. Instead, the two players were able to repeat the offence with impunity when they really should have been hown a second yellow. Realistically, Preston were lucky not to finish the game with only 9 or 10 players. 1
