Women's Football - Quandary... - General Football Chat - Owlstalk | Sheffield Wednesday News for SWFC fans Jump to content

Bit of background - I've always listened to football on the radio (don't have sky) and enjoyed listening to the Euros in 2022, so made a decision to watch a live match, which I enjoyed. No, it's not the same as men's football and the atmosphere is completely different, but get two competitive teams in a half decent stadium and watching is a pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Move on 3 years and I've ended up going to most of one Team's home games at tier 4.

Now the quandary... One of the Team's new signings this summer is an onlyfans 'model'...

Now, whilst I wouldn't class myself as a prude, I'm not sure I'm comfortable cheering on an OF 'model' on the pitch. I mean they're not exactly the ideal role model for the numerous age group girl's teams the club also has.

Or, am I totally out of touch, holding outdated views and it's all about women taking power over their lives, choosing what's right for them?

I'd appreciate sensible thoughts on the matter.

Misogyny will be reported and before anyone asks, no I won't be naming the club or player.

Not sure if it's outdated, if it's a moral view.

What I would say is that there are plenty of players in the mens game and women's game that we cheer on who may have done things we don't agree with, and most probably worse than what you're concerned about.

It’s her decision what she does with her body and she isn’t doing anything illegal or harming anyone. Other adults can choose whether they want to pay for that service or not - but outside of that it’s none of their business what she does in her private life, IMO.

Re ideal role models - how many male footballers have been done for drink driving or other criminal offences? That’s arguably a worse example to set young kids than consensually taking your kit off for a few quid

You're right it is her body, her choice, nothing illegal at all. But it's not just in her private life - she's very public and very active.

This has nothing to do with the criminal acts of other professional sports people. I'm more thinking of young female fans simply googling her name after watching her play.

The Lionesses have been quite vocal this Summer with their 'see it, be it' campaign to drive up engagement with girls football - I'm just not sure that's the 'it' that most parents have in mind for their daughters.

I can see how it might lead to potentially awkward conversations for some parents to have with their kids - but responsible parents should be having those conversations anyway since most young people spend so much time online.

Perhaps reach out to the club if it’s something you’re concerned about? I imagine the people involved there - presumably including a fair % of women - will have had similar conversations about the situation. Ultimately everyone has their own set of morals so it’s about what you do or don’t feel comfortable with.
