The best thing I’ve seen implemented to keep card costs down has been a local cricket club having a membership card that is linked to the bar payment system. You “load” money into your card in one transaction, say £50, the cricket club absorb the card processing fee, say 20p. Then they deduct whatever you buy per transaction until you use your £50 up. This saves them the cost of 20p every time you buy yourself a pint or get a round in. It adds up quickly. The club could do this and tie it to club membership and even offer a slight discount on food and drink purchases to encourage people to go this route. It would encourage more spend in the ground, and also increase profit by saving on all of those individual card transactions.
