I thought (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) we could still offer our players new contracts (up to the £7k a week cap)

Wembley of the North no more
patolookalike replied to HarrowbyOwl's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
To be the 6th 'biggest' city by population in the UK. And being slap bang in the middle of the UK with the M1 running through it. It is pretty dyer we couldn't make it as one of the 22 host stadiums. Massive opportunity missed for the city again. As fans travel to Bristol and Wrexham and Cardiff and Nottingham and fill their local businesses tills instead. Roll on preferred bidder Roll on some investment Got to be better times ahead- 60 replies

Whilst I dont disagree people seem to be claiming this is going to be easy. Like there are going to be 15 out of contract players at the end of this season who tick the boxes of being very good for league one, potentially having some re-sale value, having some experience, that aren't going to be snapped up by other clubs. Then throw 4 or 5 premier league amass style loan players (which i think might be easier than the permanent signings to be honest). All these 15-20 will play positions that means as a squad we have the right balance. They're all going to gel quickly together and work well as a team not just individual players. And we're going to know who they are and have scouted them, and can afford them. We know Henrik has been instrumental in bringing some players in, but when a takeover happens there'll be uncertainty about whether he stays on or not (as new owners often bring their own people in). So we possibly are starting from fresh with no structure or staff currently looking at these players or making contact with their agents... (again, agents should be keeping an eye on Hillsborough if their players are coming to end of contract and want to go play at a massive club with potential of success, but) Lets all be patient while we enjoy the journey

Lowest Championship Points Total?

Do you still have faith we can stay up this season? Credit to the optimism if so, I didn't know there were any believers left out there! -

I feel like we should be allowed to 'fast-forward to takeover announcement' as a fan base. -
HP doesn't set us up like though. He asks for only 2 in central midfield with two 10s. So with those players it'd be: Palmer - Cooper - Lowe Fusire - Valery - Bannan - Amass Ingellson - Lowe Cads As soon as Bannan drops deep or roams wide or moves up we look really light in cm, and if Valery also ends up covering rb/defensively (if fusire gets caught out up field or palmer needs help) we have no central midfield. I'd much prefer to see it as @Geörge Whitebread has put it with Ingellson told to stay in cm. But then I'd take jamal lowe out and put 2 up top, cads and ugbo together

First Thing Out Of The Door Under The New Owners
patolookalike replied to keefdave's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Any other team looking to get out of league one next season would be looking at having a squad with plenty of players that have pace and power and energy and skill yes. But also they'd be looking at people with experience, know how, composure, calmness. Who's got out of the league before? Who's consistently played at league one/championship level for many years? Who's handled high pressure situations? Wembley finals. Big fan base with high expectations. The miracle of Hillsborough, anyone? They'd all be wanting to sign a Liam Palmer and a Barry Bannan. And some in our fan base want us to sack them off?! Baffling. -
Svante Inglesson’s contract…
patolookalike replied to Rogers's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
This. As much as we can expect to have wealthy new owners who know their way around a football team (or have brought in people that do). 1. It'll take time to set up that structure. 2. Our squad is threadbare. If other players leave us at the end of their contracts we could be looking at needing 15 new signings. Talking about releasing players without knowing if/when we can replace them (and with what quality) seems a bit premature to me. -
Moving On From Frustrations

Sorry, I don't understand, you're saying prospective buyers would have been more interested in buying us if our fans hadn't left in injury time when we were 3-0 down? -
First Thing Out Of The Door Under The New Owners
patolookalike replied to keefdave's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
I thought it was sentimentalism? In all seriousness I want us to progress of course. I dont think that happens by just nuke-ing everything though and saying 'clean slate'. I trust our new owners will have a plan and improve us dramatically over a few seasons. I dont see them doing that by culling the likes of bannan or palmer without the ability to replace them -

Disagree. He'd be fine in league one. And at risk of asking too many times. Who are you replacing him with? Who are you getting instead? Realising we're not debating the OP, its got nothing to do with sentiment. One of us thinks hes a good enough player to have in the squad next season and one of us doesn't... -

So not resign palmer on the grounds of it'd be too sentimental? Who are you replacing him with? We cant pay fees. Hoping for a young premier league loanee? Still developing, no experience of gaining promotion from league one before? (And we can only sign a few of them, cant have an 11 of loan players, let alone a 23 man squad of them). Or signing a different 30+ something free agent, who hasn't played for Wednesday their whole career, who is going to have to get to know the area, the culture? No brainer for me. Again, not being sentimental. I dont want us to keep him on 'just because' -

Good players like in the good old days (more than 25 years ago). Lets sentimentally look back to those good players in the good times -

He should get a contract though. 2 promotions from league one in his career. We're still under embargoes so cant replace him by spending any money. It's not sentimental to keep him in and around the squad and playing when needed next year.- 83 replies

What do you expect to happen when new owners come in with regards the playing squad. HP, fine, I understand what you're saying. But a new owner comes in and despite being unable to buy players they just sack Bannan and Palmer off? Have us playing next season with just the kids (and Ugbo)? Why would anyone taking over the club try and dismantle and sideline a few of the 'good things' and good characters - feels a bit DC shunning all the legends doesn't it?

I see your 4-1-4-2 and I raise you 2-5-5-4 Stretch & Horvath in net Palmer, Iorfa, Cooper, Otegbayo, Lowe Valery, Bannan, Ingellson, Fusire, Amass Lowe, McNeil, Ugbo, Cadamarteri

Palmer as a footballer in league one. No problem. Palmer as a character in the dressing room, a steadying and calming influence, someone who can put his arm round younger players and lend his experience. Invaluable at that level. Palmer as a swfc fan, and a one club man, his enthusiasm and love for the club being at home and knowing everyone around the ground, all the staff, all current and ex players, connection with the fans. Absolutely 100000% deserves to stay on

You missed: Gk - relying on 3rd/4th choice from a team in the division below us on loan Wingers- none, no pace or threat out wide, no dribbly direct players able to beat a man The criticism from fans about the footballers on the pitch baffles me when we were left with a (light in numbers) league two squad by our previous chairman

People are quick to forget we've lost and not replaced from last year (where we hardly had a brilliant squad). Beadle, Gassama, Charles, Cissoko, Musaba, Famewo, Hatsuse, Valentin, Paterson, Windass, Ihiekwe, Smith, Armstrong, Johnson

Is this ok? I'm not trying to be a boring b*stard. But why do we keep taking photos of people and debating, zooming in, comparing, laughing at them? Sound like I'm in the witness protection programme or something, but just feels a bit off to me. Last match there was the photo of sy-with-a-y-mon doing the rounds repeatedly and i dont know it felt a bit 'invasion of privacy'. He has a public profile and chooses when he does videos/podcasts or doesn't. Don't know. Thinking out loud
