Your Money Pays For Nothing
areNOTwhatTHEYseem replied to TheGaffer's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
It certainly doesn't pay for anything this season, no. I couldn't live with myself if I handed that man another penny. As the Trust say: "No funding our own decline." Solidarity is what we need to continue to keep our foot on his neck now... -

The club gets 5% plus the booking fee for league games, and 45% plus the booking fee for cup games. So Chansiri's been handed somewhere in the region of £35,000-40,000 by our away fans so far this season. Not a huge amount in the grand scheme of things, but at a time when many fans are boycotting all spending, missing matches, cancelling ifollow etc...in order to try to force him out, it doesn't sit right. Especially when fans who attended the cheap cup games or who bought a halftime Bovril have been branded 'scabs' and 'scum' for giving him their money. The Trust are right when they say that 'every penny withheld strengthens the pressure for change'. For me, we've simply got to stick to that mantra across the board. Otherwise we create a sliding scale which some fans might just move to suit their own circumstances. -

'Not been easy' is certainly an understatement. It's been bloody awful. I've gone from a situation where I had a membership and attended the majority of Saturday afternoon kickoffs with the odd random other kickoff thrown in, to one where I'm not stepping foot in Hillsborough until Chansiri's left and can't even watch most games as I refuse to hand him money via ifollow. The worst part is that my son has only had one season of coming to matches with me and his grandparents, and I've had to explain to him why we won't taking him again for a while, why we can't watch the majority of games on TV, and why he can't have a new kit. The sacrifices many of us are making in order to try to get back to normality as soon as possible are excruciating. -

It's always possible they just copy from each other? -
Yep. Jamal Lowe said as much: "We completely understand what the fans are doing. We know the situation - it is what it is at the minute and we have to stand with them…we all know if they could, they’d all be at the game cheering us on.” The players want him gone. We're boycotting for them, too. The notion of them 'needing our support' isn't wrong, but it is misguided if you think they want us to pay money and cheer for them more than they want us to help force out the bloke who's not paying them properly - that's our way of supporting them.

We could use that as the new protest slogan. At a time where fans are being called 'scabs' and 'scum' for buying cheap cup tickets or a halftime Bovril... -
Which young players did you expect to make it?

I think he might have gone on to play at that level, but something never fully clicked for him and it felt like all the raw potential was never quite realised. -

Yeah, it is, but not in a way which makes a tangible difference to Chansiri. Those season ticket holders aren't giving additional money to Chansiri, beyond what they already handed him last year (unless they're buying food and drink etc). As the Trust say: "every penny withheld strengthens the pressure for change". Those season ticket holders will get another chance to hit him in the pocket when the 'early bird' tickets go on sale, and hopefully they all take it. But in the meantime, we need to keep that pressure on Chansiri by denying him every penny we can, not by handing him tens of thousands of pounds for away tickets. -

Having said that, I once thought Sean McAllister might be the solution to our midfield problems. In my defence, I was pretty p*ssed at the time. -

The way some on here went on about him, you'd have thought he'd have gone on to win the Balloon d'Or...if only he could have got a bit more game time for us. He always looked a bit slow and lacking in real quality to me. -

No, I don't think the Middlesborough boycott is pointless - I have no idea how you took that from what I said. It will send a message to Chansiri that this is what awaits next season if he tries to cling on. When 'early bird' tickets go on sale, season ticket holders get another chance to deny him funds, and he needs to be left in no doubt what awaits him if he chooses that path. As for Sky...I genuinely have no idea what you're suggesting here, or why. Yes, they have a deal in place with all EFL clubs: midweek games such as the Middlesborough one are all televised. We can all cancel our subscriptions and it won't alter a thing...unless you've got a reason for thinking otherwise? -

The game's on Sky - you can watch it in the pub if you like. As I say, the Sky deal is what it is. If all Wednesday fans pull our subscriptions, then it won't make a blind bit of difference to the money Chansiri gets this season. -

If cancelling my Now TV subscription meant that Chansiri would get less money, then I'd bin it off in an instant. But it won't, will it? He'll get the exact same money and I'll lose the only remaining means I have of watching Wednesday (occasionally) this season. -
Exactly. It just requires solidarity. Unfortunately, experience tells me that some will see an opportunity instead...

We'll just have to agree to disagree. The most effective protests we've seen in terms of media attention have involved empty stands, a pitch invasion and Clive Betts speaking up in parliament...none of which necessitate handing a penny to Chansiri. Hopefully we can soon add the empty stands at Hillsborough on October 22nd to that list. At a time where thousands of fans are staying away from games, boycotting ifollow, avoiding buying cheap cup tickets, and ultimately feeling more alienated from the club they love than ever before in order to help force Chansiri out, I simply can't agree that fans who refuse to boycott continuing to hand him money is something to be celebrated. It's a two-tier boycott. -

Yeah, and I disagree with them on that count. It's incompatible with the two statements I highlighted: "every penny withheld strengthens the pressure for change" and "no funding our own decline." But I know that some of them themselves want to continue going to away matches, and so it's a tough ask to boycott them. In the summer, one of their representatives said: "The problem is that most of the people in here want to go to a football match. I do. And it's very very difficult to break that habit." Which I 100% get. But we all want to go to games and support the team, and at a time where thousands of us aren't doing so in order to try to preserve the future of our club, creating a two-tier boycott simply doesn't sit right. -

Yes, it adds up to tens of thousands already. As lovely as the support of other teams' fans has been, I don't see it as moving the dial, really. I doubt Chansiri gives a sh*t. I joined all the protests last season, held up posters, chanted against the chairman...and as much as it made me feel good, I was aware that by far the most impactful thing I could do would be to refuse to hand him another penny. The most newsworthy protests so far have been the empty stand away at Leicester; the empty stadium at home to Leeds - which ended up being the top story on the BBC UK News site that evening - and the pitch invasion against Coventry. For me, that's a win-win: we attract attention to our cause without handing him another penny. -

Yeah, the away team get 5% of away sales, plus the booking fee; 45% plus the booking fee for the cup games. -

The Trust themselves agree with me on that count: "every penny withheld strengthens the pressure for change". Their conclusion seems fairly obvious to me - he's obviously scrambling around for money, the boycotts are starting to bite, and every penny we hand him (via whatever avenue) is a penny that he doesn't need to find from elsewhere. As the Trust say: "No funding our own decline." -

I get that, I really do. I'd love nothing more than to attend games to cheer them on like usual. But I can't do that without handing my money to Chansiri, so I don't And it's bloody miserable. But what happens on the pitch this season is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. -

All of which applies to me buying a matchday ticket and a pint as well. So shouldn't be a problem, then? We're trying to force Chansiri out of the club as quickly as possible. That's what will help support the players more than anything else. Every penny we hand him in the meantime simply prolongs his reign.
