It’s an expanding sport on a national level and it’s great for the 10 or so clubs whose men’s team can afford to subside large wage bills to keep them in the WSL. Outside of that not so much, lovely thought, but from a business perspective makes very little sense. As I said women’s football should be franchised like in the USA, they have their own infrastructure from grassroots up to the pros, there’s a reason why the best women’s teams are the best men’s teams.

Why? Genuine question, all women’s teams lose money and are subsidised by the men’s clubs. Whilst we’re sailing close to PSR rules in future seasons how would it help SWFC having to prop up a women’s team to the tune of a couple of million quid a season. Sheffield should have a women’s football club but it shouldn’t belong or be attached to either Wednesday or United. Nor should any women’s team be attached to existing pro clubs. Women’s teams success is purely dependent on how successful their men’s team is. If the likes of Brighton/Villa/West Ham drop out of the PL or when Leicesters PPs stop, let’s see how much appetite their is for those clubs to continue propping up the losses of their women. Womens football should be franchised. And grow naturally to stand on its own two feet.
