EFL and the Gnashing of Teeth

Still imposing restrictions for the next two years.

 

Preventing us from making the signings we want to make (Vardy for example).

 

Punishing our new owners for crimes committed by a previous owner.

 

When we were looking dead and buried, managed to scare off potential buyers.

 

Now selling their League One product using Sheffield Wednesday and it's "Nine Goal Thriller".

Whilst I think the restrictions are a pain, part of me is glad that we’re going to be more sensible. We’re better at freebies and low cost signings than we are splashing cash on lavish signings. 
 

Slattery, Mitchell, Barry, Santos, Cooper….. I mean that’s a pretty high standard of player for a team in L1. 
 

Im not sure behind the scenes they’re as concerned as our fans are. Running a sustainable club is the responsible way to go. These restrictions may be seen as a blessing by the new owners as it allows the EFL to be the bad guy when our less than patient fanbase demand more more more even when it’s not in best interest of the club.

I think after we prove we can operate sustainably after this season we will try and appeal, two years doesnt make sense.

Mixed feelings - but if am rationale after the rollercoaster under the last ownership these next 2 season restriction will serve the club better in the long term. It will allow money to be invested into the foundation NOT the playing staff - if that means an extra 2 season in league 1 so be it! 
 

A splurge into playing staff as much as I would LOVE this  - would put us on a similar trajectory to early 2015 etc..with ZERO guarantees.

 

The club will be hugely profitable this season and next at a playing / turnover level if not at a capex level  - if fans walk away because of no promo this season then so be it - I’ll get parked easily like the last few seasons  

But don’t get me wrong I’ll be bemoaning the EFL restriction also in this season and next!

I think now that the confusion over being able to reinvest proceeds from player sales is cleared up, it could work in our favour for the next two years - it negates much of the benefit of cashing in a subpar offer for players during that two year spell.

 

Nobody has a crystal ball but Slattery, Mitchell and Barry will hopefully be worth more in 24 months than they will be in six or 12mths, so keep the gang together (unless we get an offer we simply can't refuse) and let's see where steady and controlled squad building takes us.

Do not mix infrastructure spend with playing staff.

aspire have plenty of cash as it is, never mind the new model which is looking more than sustainable. With no restrictions we will still invest in hillsborough and beyond but be under no illusion the restrictions over 2 year is a ******** joke and it needs rectifying at the end of this. It wont make us sustainable, nor will it aid keeping us in check… you could argue if were scrapping the barrel for signings we will end up with crocks who then cost us in the long run and we are delaying the opportunity to sign players for 2/3/4m and able to sell for 10/15/20m in a few years.

 

we have no cash flow problems, have owners who have readies available and more investors will come when its needed, all that capital however is being held back by archaic sanctions for a club that now has completely disassociated itself from the past cretin. You are absolutely nuts if you think its a good thing

I think that I have a creative solution to a few issues that are troubling Owlstalk right now, those being:

 

1. EFL Restrictions

2. Fan Grumbling

3. Kop Trumping / Noxious Omissions 

 

 

Gas Masks, yes Gas Masks. Hear me out.......

 

Mr Storch gets the club shop to stock and sell SWFC branded Gas Masks which would be mandatory for all supporters attending games. This would give the following benefits:

 

1. The additional revenue from selling the breathing apparatus would help ease the effects of the EFLs financial limits and allow us to sign that Jamie Varadi and Lionel Messy.

2. The restrictive nature of these protective devices would reduce to a dull murmur any muttering, grumbling or negativity whenever Otegbayo or Palmer are too near the ball.

3. Finally, the masks would allow all fans to breathe in safety the lemon fresh air of Hillsborough without having to worry about foul odours caused by other fans over indulgence in sprouts and too many pints of Magnet before a game.

 

Apart from everybody looking like The Gimp from Pulp Fiction, I can't really see a downside to this idea. Make it happen please Mr Storch!

If by any miracle we do go up, and we’ve still got to operate within these restrictions, then we’ll be in a relegation fight.

To me the restrictions are reasonable.

Not a good luck to default paying back local suppliers and then weeks later spending fortunes on players over the hill like Jamie Vardy.

I don't think the same people who impose and govern sanctions are the same people who produce and edit content for social media at the EFL and its churlish to suggest theres a link.

 

In fact, it just seems to be another case of creating tension and negativity when we should be celebrating a cracking win and championing allthe great signings we HAVE made despite sanctions.

 

Remember, we ARE the EFL.

I don't think us having restrictions and having to follow a "business model" as the EFL put it is in any way unreasonable.

 

But saying we cannot put any of the money we make from player sales into further transfers is utterly barmy and the antithesis of sensible governance. Even a cap of like 50% would make some sense.

What we dont know is whether those local suppliers have done very well out of the deal. Given our crowds now and the work being done, theres a fair chance some are far better off than they would have been if Chansiri stayed - and certainly if we went under, or suffered relegation after relegation.

 

I do think some of the restrictions seem fair,  but things like not being able to reinvest part of your sale proceeds and having to count future commitments into this years transfer budget seems wrong. Clearly its not normal, otherwise the club would not have been caught out.

 

We just have to get on with it though, Im sure Storch and co. will do everything they can.
