LEYTON ORIENT v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY 3pm Saturday 15th August “Are you Orient fans?” In hindsight, a bloke in his 60s using this as an opening remark to two teenage boys, as they walked past me on a campsite in northern France two weeks ago, was a tad risky. I should explain. My son had seen these two lads wearing a football team badge which was either Orient or Bayer Leverkusen. As these two lads walked past me they were happy and joking. This meant they had a sense of humour, plus I noticed they weren’t wearing sandals and calf-length socks, so I was pretty confident they couldn’t possibly be German. What this means to anyone reading this, is that I got chatting to their dad, Tim, a massive Orient fan, so much of the drivel I am about to impart comes from a genuinely reliable source, rather than that modern interwebby thing or AI, whatever that is. Tim and I were each loading our cars to leave at the end of our holiday, trying to work out how on earth to fit everything in, and joking whether to leave behind that final case of wine or one of the kids. So, here’s expert, Tim, AKA some bloke I met briefly loading our cars on a French campsite. BEST PLAYER? Dom Ballard …and, as we all know, Tim’s pick as their stand-out player, Dom Ballard, will be troubling Millwall’s defence in the red of Bristol City, rather than bearing down on our goal wearing the red of Orient. MANAGER VIEWS? According to Tim, Richie Wellens has become pretty popular with Orient fans. Richie Wellens - Orient Manager Seemingly Wellens has his team well organised, working hard, and playing good attacking football. Tim did suggest the fans think it somewhat odd that Wellens had brought his own son into the Orient squad. Charlie Wellens But wait, there’s more… Alfie Wellens Yes, Richie Wellens has signed TWO of his sons onto the club books, leaving some fans unhappy about nepotism. Wellens was asked about this at a recent press conference and said this:- ”It’s total nonsense. I make my decisions based on ability. From the team bus-driver to the laundry staff, everyone at Orient FC is here on merit”. Team bus-driver Kenny Wellens and Laundry Manager Ethel Wellens refused to take questions, though did say that Press Officer Alan Wellens would be issuing a formal statement. FAMOUS FANS? Tim told me that their most famous fans were none other than Ray Davies, Dave Davies, Peter Quaife and Mick Avory. Who the f…? Says anyone under the age of 70. Well, you might not know their name, but you will know their songs: All Day and All of the Night, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, Lola etc etc.. Yes, the Kinks were massive Orient fans in their heyday, the Sixties. After their heyday three of the band made a second fortune. Davies, Davies and Quaife became successful local businessmen, starting the Orient Road Repair and Resurfacing Co Ltd. This success inspired them to write their famous Christmas hit, “We Three Kinks of Orient Tar”. Sincerest apologies. To the fans travelling to London, have a fabulous day. To the fans watching, listening, or taking regular sneaking looks at their phone as you try to look like you are enjoying the holiday/wedding/birthday, try to bear in mind, this is day one of 46. Who knows, maybe even day one of 49, and we all remember how much fun THAT was. And to Tim, thanks for the insight. Naturally I hope you lose this one, but feel free to win 44 of the other 45 games. We’ll take first or second… …oh, and I hope the wine was good and that your youngest is getting used to life in France. Saw a play, about the early days of the group, late last year in Leeds which I really enjoyed. 1
TheEnchanter Posted August 14 Posted August 14 (edited) After last seasons utter depressing misery and many more before that in the DC era of pain we could never approach a match knowing we were on even footing or that we had even a sniff of a chance. How good does it feel that now we have a new era. Fresh hope and genuine people on board that are trying their best for the club. You have to pinch yourself sometimes. It's easy to get carried away and forget. We've got our Wednesday back! No matter what the score is here.
