R-Sole14 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 The greatest show on earth turns 20 this season. I’m sure it’ll be another season of full of pure brilliance snuck in between all the chaos and head scratching moments that makes you wonder why they even bother. Macarthur won the cup in the pre season. Hopefully those cowbells will annoy the opposition enough to win the whole lot. Unfortunately I think Sydney are going to win this season.
Maddogbob Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Best league in the world. Absolutely bonkers and the memes alone make it worth following. Obviously I'm a Roar fan, and full season member this year. Sadly I get the feeling it could be a bit of a wooden spoon battle, but anything slightly less chaotic than last seasons three coaches and the Den (the roar active support group) battling the Queensland police service and suncorp stewards ill be happy. Sydney FC definitely early favorites.
R-Sole14 Posted October 18 Author Posted October 18 I reckon Macarthur will be hovering around mid table. We’re not that flash, but are pretty dangerous on the counter so should be able to nick a few good results. I haven’t seen any Sydney games but from what I’ve heard Douglas Costa isn’t just here for the beaches.
Fairy Tail Owl Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Went to a few victory games when I was there. Also went to see Brisbane roar play once there was about 2 thousand people in a 60k stadium

Lowry Posted October 18 Posted October 18 I love any memes about the trophy itself. Who's idea was that?! Western United supporter. Aloisi's last chance saloon if he doesn't make finals
Maddogbob Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Tbf the league have done really well this year promoting the competition, certainly in an attempt to drum up interest. Will it convert into bums on seats?

Roar need a bespoke ground, they are trying and want to rebuild and use Perry Park. Suncorp is far to big and used for lots of other things during the season (it's why roar only have 3 home games before Christmas this year). Queensland doesn't really have a home of football in the state. There are a lot of complexities around football in Australia, I'm still mostly getting my head around it. Owl.1867 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Me v @Maddogbob tonight then. Looking like upwards of 20,000 at Mt Smart for the first Auckland FC game. Given up my usual seat from my Warriors membership in order to go behind the goal and see how the atmosphere ends up being.

Obviously a TV job for me. I'm not quite in the place where I can go on an away adventures just yet. No idea regarding the Auckland squad bar the goalkeeper, who's very very decent. Hoping I'll be allowed to watch FC vs WSW later Edited October 18 by Maddogbob

Wellington are fuming about that situation, and I admit I likely would be as well, but it's quite funny to see how salty they are about another NZ team coming into the league again. Was hoping to do Phoenix away, but work situation is tricky right now so I need to wait and see. No chance I'll be going to Australia! If I can get things sorted I was hoping for Vegas with the Warriors, but thanks to Luxon et al (no politics) things are a bit tight.

Must admit was quite funny when someone invaded the Wellington pitch in a Auckland shirt late last season. Obviously a set up. Odd situation around the keeper. I'm not sure but isn't the Bournemouth owner involved with Auckland? Over to NZ would be a bucket list job for me, but for me to go being English (and not Aussie in any form). Involves visas etc. so it's a little more complicated and expensive I'm assuming. Plus because I'm not allowed to earn a full wage here ATM, even a visit to Sydney is off the table for unite round. I'm determined to do an away adventure at some point though and the eldest lad would love it. He's a big fan and really enjoys going to the games here.

Yeah it's the same owner as Bournemouth and Hibs. It definitely looks dodgy, especially as I'm not sure that he'd be good enough for either of the top two flights in England and therefore can easily look like the owner as done it to take a player to Auckland. In his defence, this is his hometown and so there's an argument that it makes sense to be here whilst Bournemouth see how he develops. I just hope that AFC can build on the hype they've generated since the announcement. Kiwis don't really go and watch losing teams, with the exception being the Warriors but there's a special bond there that can't be manufactured. I'm also hoping the atmosphere is good and not too cringeworthy; it needs to be organic and uniquely ours. Too often you see people trying to recreate what they've seen online and it's excruciating.
R-Sole14 Posted October 18 Author Posted October 18 Third crack at a team from Auckland too. It’s great to hear the buzz about the team too. Curious to see how many will become rusted on regulars. The potential for the team seems quite large and it’s great for the league to have two New Zealand teams to create that rivalry, not only between themselves but also battle over who is the real Distance Derby to Perth. Auckland is further distance wise from Perth, but Wellington is the longer journey.

Yeah the thing I've noticed most is the organised "active fan" sections, I struggle a bit with that, I prefer more organic as you say. They can be quite good though. My lad was actually a bit gutted we ended up with tickets not in the Den. I don't mind it either. I've always found the active fan group in Brisbane a decent bunch. Long story short, I was given two free memberships by an ex Roar goalkeeper who was training my other son. Before he went off to play for WSW as the third choice keeper, I'm assuming. So I was just very humbled and very surprised and grateful. Regardless.

Regarding how sustainable it can be, we will have to see. They've done the first bit right, with social media promoting links between the Blues, Warriors and AFC generating the feeling of a club that is of the city. Again, using blue as the colour helps with this. Mt Smart is also the best stadium choice, as while they won't sell out often it can be done, has good transport links and has a good atmosphere when anywhere near full. The team will need to do well, and I think they will do OK. They won't be bottom dwellers I think, and we've seen with the Vegas Golden Knights (and arguably Paulsen) that the ownership don't mind being disruptors to make that happen.
