I think it was the 1990/91 season (certainly late 80s/early 90s), on a coach from Swinton/Mexborough, we'd set off early to try to get down to the game against City, knowing that the blizzard-like conditions meant this was in reality unlikely.
We got as far as Clay Cross on the M1 when traffic came to a standstill, so after 10/15 minutes of having snowball fights with Sunderland fans who I think were on their way down to Tottenham (certainly one of the London clubs), someone decided it'd be a great idea to find the nearest motorway exit and find a pub!! So we left the coach driver and the remaining 10 or so who didn't fancy it on the bus and set off walking, and after about 1 to 2 miles eventually found a village with a pub that had just opened. Cue about 40 Wednesdayites and a slightly smaller number of Sunderland fans descending on this village pub; I'm not sure if they were rubbing their hands with glee at the prospect of a bumper payday or filled with trepidation about two sets of opposing football fans descending on their pub!!
Anyway, the beer flowed and there wasn't one bit of trouble, just some friendly banter between the 2 sets of fans, as it should be. After a few hours of drinking and singing we thought we better make our way back to the coach, so off we marched, though I'm sure on the way back it seemed more like 3 or 4 miles back to the motorway!! Once there, we walked down the still standing traffic jam and eventually found our coach about a mile further down the motorway than where we'd left it; that's all it had travelled!! Thankfully the heaters were on full blast to dry out our socks and warm up our frozen extremities, before eventually the traffic started moving slowly so that we could get to the next motorway exit and come back up the M1 northbound to make our way home.
It was one of the best matches we never actually saw in terms of the day out, and I think the game finished with honours even at 1-1.
