The Owls will celebrate International Women’s Day when we take on Cambridge at Hillsborough on Saturday.
On Tuesday, the world celebrated the achievements of women in all industries to mark to the annual occasion and we will be putting the focus on our female staff and supporters in S6 this weekend.
Local charity Saffron will hold a bucket collection around our stadium prior to our game with the U’s.
The organisation support women who are survivors of abuse and trauma, offering psychotherapy and wellbeing courses to help them rebuild their lives.
Ahead of kick-off, players of both clubs will don warm-up shirts showing support for HerGameToo, a national organisation which aims to raise awareness of, and combat, sexism in football.
Dozens of professional and grassroots clubs around the country have joined forces with HerGameToo, highlighting the appetite for making football stadia a more comfortable environment for women.
Wednesday’s HerGameToo ambassador Victoria Wood (AKA ME) told swfc.co.uk: “Saturday will be a great day to be a female Sheffield Wednesday fan.
“To see the club supporting the campaign is really special and the players wearing our messaging is so important.
“Everyone should be able to go to a football game and feel safe and comfortable, regardless of their gender, age, disabilities, race or sexuality. We all want to see Wednesday do well and that's all that matters."
Young female Wednesdayites will wave flags as the Owls enter the field of play, before the Wednesday Ladies are greeted at half time.
Members of the junior teams will lap the Hillsborough pitch, giving supporters a chance to show their appreciation for our women’s side.
The Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme will also be facilitating mini games of girl’s football on the pitch before the teams return for the second half.
We look forward to seeing everyone at Hillsborough to join us in celebrating International Women’s Day.
