  1. It is what it is, paying for mistakes of the past. Do I wish things were different? Sure I do, but as I said, we were never going to be spending any money this summer Frees and loans, that’s why we’ve brought in Darren Moore
  2. All those things are true Trev, but I don’t think we’d have been spending anything anyway. If we couldn’t find the money for a left back and a striker, that may have saved the club an estimated 8m, in the January window, we were never going to be spending in league one With only about a dozen players contracted for next season, they will have to allow us to sign frees, and bring in loanees. Seriously, I don’t think it would be anything other than that anyway
  3. Who cares whether we’re under an embargo now, as long as it’s lifted before the window reopens. We weren’t going to be spending money anyway, so with plenty of big earners going, there will be funds to replace them with frees and loanees.
  4. A tremendous all round performance, but yes, a tinge of sadness that they haven’t produced that sort of performance before. It all seems a bit too late. I agree with Holmowl, a simple change of tactics has enabled Rhodes to operate successfully as a lone striker, with Windass playing just behind. When we use Paterson as a striker, the temptation was, to float the ball into the box, hoping he could win it Keeping it on the ground, and playing balls into feet, is the sort of service Rhodes requires. To be honest, it suit most of our players, in fact pretty much all footballers would prefer to play that way. When we failed to replace Fletcher, we should have played the ball into to feet from the off, instead of the dreadful percentage game. It’s a more precise way of attacking.
  5. Spot on about Paterson, his goals can be useful from midfield Don’t think he has enough of a forwards attributes to playing up front He’s much better coming onto the ball Not having a target man, means we have to play the ball with purpose in to feet Even with Fletcher, who actually was a good target man, our attacking play became far too limited
  6. It’s not difficult, today we kept it on the ground, as we did under Carlos in season one.
  7. There’s a lot of throw posted on here concerning Palmer. He’s a decent full back at this level and the attacking side of his game has improved immensely The thing with Palmer is, he generally tries to play ball into feet, not the floaty crosses we usually favour. In fact, that was noticeable about our performance today, keeping it on the ground whenever possible We looked so much better for doing that
  8. Now that’s what I’ve been banging on about That is the role for Paterson
  9. Makes me so angry that Barnsley snapped up him, and Morris from Norwich, for next to nothing Meanwhile, we were tyre kicking at Aberdeen, supposedly trying to sign 2m Cosgrove. Our clueless recruitment team have singlehandedly cost us our Championship place
  10. Don’t believe any of that, he was just towing the party line. Think we can see how he felt about most of those signings, by how many times he played them. The team was usually 5 or 6 of the side he inherited, plus 5 or 6 that Roeder brought in. After Roeder and his team left, the new recruitment team were a disaster. 16 signings post Wembley, and not one of them improved the side
  11. He’s better than Gestede, less of a lump, more of a Luke Varney type
  12. It’s only support, if it’s used to benefit the squad. Think it’s pretty obvious that’s not been the case.
  13. They’ve been a better side than us since Christmas
  14. Considering virtually nobody on here expects us to stay up, aren’t we getting a bit worked up about what others are doing?
  15. We were apparently interested in Mikael Mandron of Crewe, back in January, I wonder if we’ll explore that one again. Never been prolific, but maybe offers more all round play than the likes of Wyke and Jephcott. That might have benefitted Rhodes back in January, but of course we won’t have him next season
  16. Think they want 3-4m for him. Be interesting to see if we actually have any money to pay a fee for anyone
  17. What if we don’t sell any of our existing under contract players, and don’t resign any of those out of contract, what would we need? How would this side fare in League One? Wildsmith Palmer Iorfa Dunkley New Luongo Bannan New Paterson Windass New Assuming we actually signed, a left back, a winger and a centre forward, and backed it up with half a dozen loan signings, we should do OK with that squad, no?
  18. Differing recruitment systems used by Barnsley and Brentford, but the approach is the same, sign players who are young enough to improve, and for the positions that are required. That’s a simple philosophy that we have been unable to grasp. For example, would either of those clubs embark on a championship season without having a recognised left back, or a centre forward? Doing that was madness, and the imbalance that caused, was always going to bring trouble. Crazily, we had the opportunity to rectify things in the January window, while still being in touch with the clubs above. Again we failed to address the problem, despite plenty of players being available, who could have sorted the problem. Our rapid decline is wholly down to years of incredibly poor recruitment
  19. Agreed, and I believe he would have turned things around. Carlos proved in that second season, that he was capable of innovating, despite what was foisted upon him. People say that he should have achieved more with the resources at his disposal, as if all that money spent on dross gave him some sort of advantage. In fact, as we continue to see, no matter how many players you sign, if they are the wrong players, they become more of a hindrance than a benefit. So Carlos may have had more players at his disposal, but all that meant was, that he was hindered more than most. You can see what Carlos thought of most of the signings, he reached Wembley, largely with the players he inherited. Despite over 30 players being signed, Carlos continued to build the side around the players left by his predecessor, and few of the signings made by his original recruitment team.
  20. Ruffels is a good player, and Oxford have several good young players. It makes you think though doesn’t it. People are looking at all these players in League One, sometimes several from the same club, and yet, most are saying, get rid of all ours, they’re not good enough. Does that suggest that we would struggle in that division? Probably not. Some of those mentioned, like Ruffels for example, would definitely strengthen us, especially in a position where we are weak, but others, are probably not as good as what we have. Some of our players who struggled in the championship, may well thrive in League One? The biggest thing for me is, addressing the balance of the side. Until the side is balanced, we will struggle whatever the personnel Had we added a decent left back, and a proper number 9, there is no way we would have struggled as we have this season. Sort out those two positions, and add a bit of energy with a few young Premier League loanees, and some of our existing players might look a whole lot better.
  21. You could see that happening, yeah. However, I’m still hopeful that he appointed Moore, when he did, with an eye on us spending a stint in League One. Certainly I would be comfortable with Moore at the helm, for all the reasons you suggest. Personally though, I don’t envisage a bigger clear out than the one we had last season, and I think probably one or two of the out of contract players will stay. That would suggest a similar amount of arrivals to last season, about 7 or 8. As long as we have a better summer window than the one we had last year, 7 or 8 should do it. It will be interesting to see how many of those will be permanent signings, given Moore’s liking for the loan market. I assume we’d need to sign a permanent left back, and at least a couple of strikers, simply because we don’t have any, then add some more attacking talent on loan. Hopefully we won’t sign any lower league journeymen on permanent deals, or otherwise, unless we are planning a longer stay than most would anticipate. There’s enough experience in the squad, bar up front, for us to concentrate our efforts on bringing in younger players who are looking to improve. Moore has proven to be good at that

  23. Probably more about our decline, but both those players would have been useful.
  24. Easily had us playing the most entertaining football since I’ve been watching us
